Virginia "Jinny" Schreckengost Obituary

Virginia "Jinny" I. Schreckengost, nee Bartlett, was born in 1929 in the Michigan small town of Lake Odessa, living several years on the family farm/homestead before moving into town. She went to Otterbein College in Ohio where she met her husband, George. Together they raised 5 children, teaching them to love the Lord, and each other. Jinny shared her passion for music with her family, teaching them to play piano (if they wanted) and to sing in harmony.

Jinny loved nature and people. She loved her 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She not only welcomed spouses into the family, but others who needed to experience the love and welcome that our family offered. Jinny had a great smile and sense of humor with an infectious laugh. Even in her last year of life at the nursing home, her gentle spirit was evident: she was patient and never complained (at least rarely).

Jinny was able to play the piano at church, and accompanied many gifted students from Cleveland schools at solo and ensemble contests. In retirement at Copeland Oaks, Jinny used her music skills to direct the Chime Choir and accompany the Chorale, as well as occasionally playing at Vesper Service.

Jinny's finger skills at the piano also made her a good typist. She earned money typing papers for others at college and seminary, and was a valued office worker in several jobs through the years.

Moving several times through the years gave Jinny and George the blessing of many friends across northeast Ohio, and they tried to keep in touch with as many as possible. After their youngest graduated from high school they took that opportunity to travel together for many years. George did the driving while Jinny passed the time working on crossword puzzles.

Jinny is now in the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ, and having a wonderful reunion with George, her parents and siblings already deceased, and many others who have gone on before her. She leaves behind her children: Elaine Weaver (Walt, deceased), Ruth Novak (Frank), Lois Miller (Jim), John (John Kelly), Jim (Cathie); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as brother Dale Bartlett, cousin Marilyn Rathbun; many nieces and nephews, and many friends.
