Richard "Rick" Peppel

June 19, 1958 — March 15, 2024

Berlin Center

Richard A. Peppel, affectionately known as Rick to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, in Berlin Center, Ohio. He was born on June 19, 1958, in Salem, Ohio, and his warm presence and infectious laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rick was a proud 1976 graduate of David Anderson High School and spent much of his professional life dedicated to the field of surface coal mining with Rosebud Mining. His commitment to his community shone brightly through his 22 years of service as a Firefighter/EMT for the Berlin Township Fire Department. His leadership and bravery were evident to all, culminating in his role as fire chief from 2002 to 2019 until his retirement in 2020.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rick was a man of many passions. An avid golfer, he was often found on the greens, enjoying the game he loved. He took great joy in watching golf as well, sharing moments of triumphs and defeats with fellow enthusiasts. Rick's appreciation for nature was evident in his love for hummingbirds and the meticulous care he took of his yard, creating a serene and welcoming space for all. He particularly loved his roses.

Barbecues, motorcycles, and coffee, particularly from Starbucks, were among Rick's favorite things, but nothing compared to the joy he found in his grandchildren. Zach, Emma, Harper, Makenna, Alex, Wesley, Kobi, and Kinsley were the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Rick's family was the cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind his loving fiancée, Shellie Newhouse; his devoted daughter, Cassie (Brent) Eastridge; and his brothers, Paul (Becky) Peppel Jr., David (Nellie) Peppel, and Brian Peppel. Rick was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Arlene (Bosel) Peppel. Each family member played a unique and cherished role in his life, and they will carry on his legacy with the love and lessons he imparted.

Those who knew Rick will remember him as a loving, funny, and selfless man. His sense of humor brought laughter to even the most mundane moments, and his selflessness ensured that he was always there for anyone in need. Rick's love knew no bounds, and it was this love that he poured into every aspect of his life, from his work to his personal passions.

Rick's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones, but they take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire them. His laughter, his kindness, and his unwavering love will be remembered and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
