Shirley Steer passed away on July 17, 2026 at Crandall Medical Center. Shirley was born in New Orleans, LA on December 8, 1936, to Frank and Lottie Nutt. Shirley spent her younger years in Barton, Arkansas under the care of her grandparents while her mother worked on behalf of the war effort. She moved to Damascus, Ohio as a teenager and graduated from Goshen High School. She married her husband Edwin Steer Jr. on June 20, 1954. They moved to Boston, MA while Ed served with the US Army during the Korean War. After his assignment, they moved back to the Damascus area, where they raised their three children. At the age of 36, Shirley began attending Kent State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1971. In 1988 she earned a Master of Education from Kent State. Shirley was a teacher working primarily in the West Branch elementary schools of Maple Ridge and Goshen. Her hobbies included gardening and caring for her cats. She is proceeded in death by her sister Judith Strohecker, her mother Lottie and stepfather Joseph Braund. Shirley is survived by her three children, Diana (Tony) Tenzek, Mike (the late Judith) Steer and David (Sheila) Steer, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Shirley was a member of the Damascus Methodist Church and the Damascus Historical Society. Shirley's cremains were interred at Damascus cemetery in a private graveside funeral service.
