It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul William Bates, who departed this life on April 19, 2026, at the age of 80.
Paul was born on August 26, 1945, in Youngstown, Ohio, and lived a life defined by dedication to his family and country. He proudly served in the United States Navy as a radioman during the Vietnam War, earning the Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star and one silver star. His service reflected the deep sense of duty and commitment that carried through every aspect of his life.
Following his military service, Paul became a skilled and respected electrician, continuing a family legacy as a second-generation tradesman. He was a longtime member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #64 where his work ethic and craftsmanship were well known.
Paul had a deep love for the water. An avid boater, he proudly earned his boat captain's license and spent countless hours enjoying time on the water with family and friends. He owned several boats throughout his life and was especially passionate about waterskiing, a joy he shared by teaching his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of the All Ports Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore, and was also a member of the Yellow Dog Commodore Club.
In addition to his love of boating, Paul had a passion for antique cars, owning several over the years and attending car shows whenever he could. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, creating lasting memories through shared traditions and simple moments together.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Maeo (Saelow) Bates; his daughter, Kim (Bryan) Evans; and his son, Mark (Jessica) Bates. He was a proud grandfather to Lydia, Grace, and John Bates, and Ava, Kolt, and Ethan Evans. He was also a proud uncle to Timothy (Brenda) Bates. He is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Kathleen (Schaaf) Bates, his brother, Robert Bates Jr. and niece Kathy (Bates) Hawley.
A man of warmth, wisdom, and humor, Paul touched the lives of many. His legacy of love, integrity, and quiet strength will live on in all who knew him.
