It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Linda Howell, a remarkable woman whose kindness, warmth, and fierce spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Linda departed this world on July 4, 2026, surrounded by her beloved family after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.
Born on January 14, 1956, to James Ransom McMahan Jr. and Barbara Wallen, Linda's life was marked by service and dedication to her loved ones.
She was predeceased by her beloved parents and brothers, Thomas and Michael McMahan, and is survived by a family who will continue to celebrate her life and legacy: her beloved husband, Jeffrey Howell; her sisters, Teresa Tabor (John West) and Dawn Wallace (Jon); her children and their spouses, Christopher Rinehart (Jennifer Cooke-Rinehart), Michelle Fritzke (Christopher), Arthur Howell, and Stephanie Rinehart-Joseph (Daniel); and her precious grandchildren, Michael, Raylyn, and Isabella. Linda also embraced many extended family and friends as her own, including Thomas, Dara, and Logan Redfern, and Torin Penwell.
Linda's life was enriched by her marriage to Jeffrey Howell, whom she wed on March 31, 1998. Their union was one of the best chapters in her life's story. Together, Linda and Jeffrey shared a once in a lifetime love that was evident to all who knew them.
Linda proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1996, achieving the rank of HM1, Medical Department Administration. Her distinguished career included deployments during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Her commendations are a testament to her dedication and valor, including the Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (13 awards), and more.
She would never let us publish this without reminding everyone that women are veterans too. Celebrate them.
After her military service, Linda continued to serve her country through her work as a Program Manager at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and later in Administration at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV.
Beyond her professional achievements, Linda was known for her kind heart and friendly nature. Linda had a gift for conversation, making everyone feel seen and valued, whether she was meeting a new acquaintance or reconnecting with an old friend. Linda delighted in travel, especially enjoying cruises with her family and RV trips, where she created countless cherished memories. Linda's big heart extended to animals of all kinds, leading her to adopt many dogs, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, rats, and even one turtle throughout her life.
Linda would proudly tell everyone that she had "been there - done that!" Linda lived up to that statement, personally and professionally, by traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East, being stationed and living in Germany, and moving to many U.S. states.
As we remember Linda Howell, we celebrate a life that was full and vibrant, marked by love, service, and an unyielding dedication to family and country. Her legacy will be carried on by those who were fortunate enough to know her and be influenced by her strength and kindness. Her husband, Jeffrey Howell, says that Linda was "the most dynamic person I have ever met in my life!" It is hard to think of anyone who knew her well that would disagree. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence and a family deeply grateful for the time spent with her.
