He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1969. Shortly after his return home, Carl was lucky enough to be introduced to Jean Wilson, who later became the love of his life. They were married September 26, 1970. Together they are the parents of Barbara (Shawn) Heverly of Salem, Samuel (Andria) Phillips of Beloit, and Benjamin (Melissa) Phillips of Wilmington, NC. And fur baby cat Pirate. Carl took great pride in his entire family which includes grandchildren Andrea and Abby Heverly and Brent, Cole and Carly Phillips.

Carl took an interest in Scouting as a young Cub Scout and then Boy Scouts. He went on numerous camping trips in all kinds of weather, hiked part of the Appalachian Trail, swam The Mile at Camp Stambaugh and most proudly as a young teen, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was later a Scoutmaster for his sons.

Carl worked as a diesel mechanic for Ohio Machinery. He loved his job and was never faced with a problem he couldn't solve, one way or another. He enjoyed to travel especially his trip to Alaska, cross country trips with family, Disney World and of course Engine Shows. Carl and his brother Dale enjoyed going to small engine shows each year in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Sometimes they demonstrated their own small steam engines that they made. Carl was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church, He served as a bus driver, tested the water and went on several mission trips with work crews.
