I just found out about Lance's passing. Lance and I were classmates at SIU-Carbondale, and we shared many stories and lots of laughter. Some of my memories include seeing the film Apollo 13 with him and joining him on the balcony outside Faner Hall when I saw him standing out there with an intense expression, probably pondering philosophy and literary theory. Sadly, I lost touch with him. I am so happy to read his former students' memorials and to know that he found a home at Kent State.

I had Lance as a professor at LSSU in Fall 2000. I was a freshman, and he was my first class. He was such a wonderful professor and left a lasting impression on me. I Googled him and was so sad to learn he had passed. A wonderful man.

I was a student of Lance's in several of his college English courses he taught at Kent Salem. He was a wonderful teacher, with a heart of gold, and her knew how to bring out the best in people, not only academically but personally as well. He and I quickly became friends and went out for dinner/lunch as the mood struck us. I will never forget his lessons, nor his ability to inspire potential.

My thoughts are with the Rivers family. It is so sad when a loved one dies. Jesus said in John 5:28 "the hour is coming in which all those in the graves will hear my voice and come out." I hope this will give you some hope at this difficult time.

I graduated from Pekin Community High School with Lance and remember him, even back in those days, as such a nice, thoughtful teenager. Marcus Aurelius said, "It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live." I believe Lance truly lived his life-cut-short; I wish all his family and loved ones peace and comfort.
